The Maldives tourism industry has begun 2026 on a solid growth trajectory, welcoming 303,488 tourists as of 9 February, marking a 5.1 percent increase compared to the same period last year, according to the latest daily tourism update released on 10 February. The figures signal sustained global demand for the island destination, with major markets in Europe and Asia continuing to drive arrivals.
China emerged as the largest source market so far this year, contributing 39,132 visitors (12.9%), followed closely by Russia with 36,565 arrivals (12.0%). Italy, the United Kingdom, and Germany also remained among the top five markets, reflecting the Maldives’ continued appeal across European travelers. India, France, the United States, Poland, and Austria completed the top ten list of source markets for early 2026.
The majority of tourists entered the country through Velana International Airport, which handled nearly 99 percent of all arrivals, underscoring its dominant role as the nation’s main aviation gateway. Regional airports such as Hanimaadhoo, Maafaru, Gan, Dhaalu, and Villa International collectively accounted for a small share of incoming travelers.
Resort tourism continued to anchor the industry, receiving 68 percent of all visitors, while guesthouses captured a significant 27.1 percent share, highlighting the sustained growth of community-based tourism. Hotels and safari vessels accounted for smaller proportions of the market.
In terms of accommodation capacity, the Maldives currently operates 1,275 tourist establishments with a combined 67,009 beds, the majority located in resort properties. Guesthouses form the largest number of establishments, indicating the diversification of the tourism product beyond traditional luxury offerings.
January arrivals reached 224,788, while the first nine days of February alone recorded 78,700 visitors, suggesting that the country is on track to maintain steady growth following a record 2.24 million tourists in 2025.
Industry observers say the early performance reflects strong air connectivity, diversified market demand, and continued global interest in high-end island destinations. As the peak winter travel season continues, stakeholders remain optimistic that 2026 could deliver another year of robust tourism performance for the Maldives.
