One of the pioneers of luxury tourism in the Maldives, Mohamed Nazeer, co-founder and director of Sunland Hotels, passed away last night in the United Kingdom.
He died while undergoing treatment for an illness that was not publicly disclosed.
Nazeer served as the Trade Ambassador at the Maldives High Commission in the United Kingdom. He was a philanthropist, a friend to many, and a vocal supporter of the political reform movement in the early 2000s.
His family includes prominent businessmen, religious scholars, and former government ministers. His brother, the late Dr. Abdul Majeed Abdul Bari, was a respected Islamic scholar and a former Minister of Islamic Affairs. Another brother, Hussein Hilmy, served as the Minister of Youth and Sports.
The company founded by Nazeer and his brothers, Sunland Hotels, owns and operates luxury resorts including Coco Bodu Hithi and Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu. Their Coco Collection brand launched its first resort in 1998, making it the first Maldivian-owned luxury resort brand.
The family's journey in hospitality began with a travel
agency in 1985, expanding into resort operations in late 1990s. Sunland has
also managed other properties such as Biyadhoo Island Resort, among others.
