Tourism Must Focus on People, Says Finance Minister at Hotelier Maldives Awards 2025

Minister of Finance and Planning Moosa Zameer has reaffirmed the government’s support for the Maldives’ tourism sector by focusing on developing human talent and encouraging foreign investment.

Speaking at the Hotelier Maldives Awards 2025, held at Barceló Nasandhura Malé and presented by Bestbuy Maldives (BBM), Zameer highlighted the key role played by hospitality workers in keeping the Maldives a top global tourist destination.

“Tourism is the bedrock of our economy,” the minister said, “but we must never lose sight of the people who uphold this industry.” He added that the government sees tourism not just as a way to earn revenue but as a “human enterprise” powered by thousands of hardworking individuals across the country’s resorts and hotels.

The awards recognized outstanding professionals in various hospitality fields, including front office, culinary, engineering, and management.

Zameer urged resort operators and hospitality leaders to focus on people as they grow: “Infrastructure is important, design matters — but it is talent, culture, and leadership that truly define guest experiences.”

He also stressed the need to create more opportunities for youth and women in tourism: “We are committed to ensuring that career paths in tourism are professional, rewarding and full of opportunity.” He added, “But we cannot do this alone. We need your continued investment in training, mentorship, and inclusive workplaces.”

To investors and business partners, Zameer sent a clear message that the Maldives remains open to new ideas and investment: “We are working to strengthen public finance and infrastructure while ensuring that private enterprise continues to flourish — especially in tourism.”

The ceremony also celebrated four recipients of the Hotelier Maldives Award for Dedicated Service, recognizing their long-term contributions to the industry.

Zameer concluded by calling for continued cooperation across the industry: “We are committed to ensuring that career paths in tourism are professional, rewarding and full of opportunity... We need your continued investment in training, mentorship, and inclusive workplaces.” He encouraged all stakeholders to help build an industry that provides world-class guest experiences while also supporting the people behind the scenes.

Organized by Hotelier Maldives magazine, the event drew wide public attention with more than 450 nominations and over 600,000 votes, bringing together tourism professionals, partners, and industry leaders from across the Maldives.
