The new
passenger terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) meets international
aviation safety standards, according to the Directorate of Aviation Security
Administration (DASA), the national authority tasked with regulating aviation
security in the Maldives.
Speaking in a
recently released video ahead of the terminal's official opening on July 26,
DASA's Head and Chief Aviation Security Inspector, Ahmed Nasheed, said the
facility has been designed and built in accordance with the highest global
safety benchmarks. He emphasized that the Baggage Handling System (BHS)
installed in the terminal mirrors the advanced security systems used in leading
international airports.
As the
Aviation Security Regulatory Authority, we believe the security standards
implemented within the terminal are exceptionally thorough, Nasheed
stated. Passengers travelling to and from the Maldives can expect
enhanced security screening through state-of-the-art equipment and
infrastructure.
Nasheed noted
that the new terminal not only elevates the level of passenger safety but also
marks a transformative step for the country’s aviation sector. The new
terminal will bring joy to the nation in many ways. It will enable us to
welcome more international airlines that are interested in operating flights to
the Maldives, he added.
The new terminal
is one of the most significant upgrades to the nation’s primary international
gateway in recent years, aiming to address longstanding operational
inefficiencies and accommodate growing passenger volumes.
DASA, which
operates under the Ministry of Defense, is responsible for regulating all
aspects of civil aviation security in line with international conventions. Its
mandate includes designating secure airport zones, overseeing compliance with
global aviation security protocols, and representing the Maldives in global
forums concerning air traffic safety.
With DASA’s
confirmation of the terminal’s compliance, travelers and aviation stakeholders
alike can expect a safer, more efficient, and internationally aligned air
travel experience at VIA.
