Established on
April 1, 1995, Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) pioneered the development
of a water production and wastewater management system in the Maldives. Over
the past three decades, MWSC has evolved from a small utility provider into a
key player in ensuring clean water and efficient sewerage services for more
than 50% of the Maldivian population. From its modest beginnings with just 60
employees serving 60,000 residents in Malé, the company has expanded its
services across multiple islands, reflecting its unwavering commitment to
improving water and sanitation infrastructure nationwide.
Founding
Vision and Early Challenges
MWSC was founded
to address the urgent need for a reliable water supply and proper sewerage
system in Malé, which was grappling with rapid urbanization and a growing
population. Prior to its establishment, clean water access and wastewater
management were limited, posing significant public health risks. The company's
primary goal was to provide potable water and implement sustainable wastewater
solutions, ensuring a healthier and cleaner environment for residents.
Initially
managed by a Danish administrative team, MWSC transitioned into a fully locally
managed entity over the years. Today, it employs more than 1,013 professionals,
investing heavily in professional development through specialized training
programs, short-term courses, and long-term scholarships.
Growth,
Innovation, and Infrastructure Expansion
MWSC has made
remarkable progress in expanding its water production and storage capacity. At
its inception, the company had a daily water production capacity of 900 cubic
meters and a storage capacity of 10,000 cubic meters. Today, MWSC produces
47,300 cubic meters of water daily, with a storage capacity of 44,858 cubic
meters. By the end of 2025, water production is expected to increase by 26%,
while storage capacity is projected to grow by 28%.
A major
milestone in MWSC's infrastructure expansion is the completion of the main
water pipeline through the Sinamalé Bridge, which connects Malé and Hulhumalé.
Expected to be operational by the end of 2025, this project will allow up to
800 tonnes of water per hour to be transferred between the two islands,
improving supply reliability.
Beyond Malé,
MWSC now provides water and sewerage services to Villimalé, Hulhumalé,
Gulhifalhu, Thilafushi, Kaafu Maafushi, Raa Dhuvaafaru, and Haa Dhaalu
Kulhudhuffushi. The company has also diversified its operations, offering
electricity services, waste management solutions, and ice supplies for
fishermen in Raa Dhuvaafaru.
Key
Achievements and Milestones
MWSC's
dedication to quality and innovation has been marked by several achievements:
To date, MWSC
has completed 107 water and sanitation projects across the country, playing a
pivotal role in improving access to clean water and sanitation.
Financial
Growth and Investment in the Future
MWSC continues
to strengthen its financial position while expanding its services. The company
recently launched a MVR 400 million bond in the Maldives capital market to fund
ongoing and future infrastructure projects. The bond issuance, managed by First
National Finance Corporation, will take place in two phases, with the first
phase offering MVR 200 million through MWSC’s portal. Investors can expect an annual
interest rate of 7.5% over five years.
Despite a slight
decline in revenue from USD 24 million in 2023 to USD 22 million last year,
MWSC recorded a significant profit increase in the 2024.
Commitment to
Excellence and Sustainability
MWSC remains
dedicated to improving customer experience and accessibility. Plans are
underway to launch a 24-hour customer care center, expand digital services
through smart meters, and upgrade its online portal and mobile application.
These initiatives aim to provide seamless services to consumers while embracing
technological advancements.
The company also
upholds its corporate social responsibility through initiatives like the Rasfari
reef restoration project, in collaboration with the Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA). These efforts underscore MWSC’s commitment to environmental
sustainability.
Looking
Ahead: A Vision for the Future
As MWSC
celebrates 30 years of service, it looks toward the future with ambitious
goals. The company is focusing on expanding its reach beyond Malé, with plans
to enhance water security across the Maldives. By integrating renewable energy
solutions and smart water management systems, MWSC aims to optimize efficiency
and sustainability.
The journey of
MWSC is a testament to resilience, innovation, and dedication to public
welfare. From its humble beginnings to becoming a vital part of Maldivian
society, MWSC’s legacy continues to shape the nation’s water and sanitation
sector. As it embarks on the next phase of growth, the company remains
steadfast in its mission to provide clean water and efficient sewerage
services, ensuring a healthier and more sustainable future for all Maldivians.
