Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has entered into an agreement with the Ministry of Sports, Fitness, and Recreation to establish fitness and recreation centers in 63 islands across the country, advancing the government’s pledge to enhance health and wellbeing nationwide.
The Memorandum
of Understanding (MoU) was signed at a special ceremony held at H. Meeru Maa.
Representing MACL, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Ibrahim
Shareef Mohamed signed the agreement, while Minister of Sports and Physical
Wellbeing Abdullah Rafiu signed on behalf of the Ministry.
In his remarks,
Mr. Shareef highlighted the significance of the initiative, noting that MACL is
proud to contribute to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s vision of establishing
fitness centers in every inhabited island by 2026. “It is a great honor for
MACL to play a role in ensuring the physical fitness and wellbeing of Maldivian
citizens,” he said.
Minister
Abdullah Rafiu commended the partnership, emphasizing that government-owned
companies and private entities are vital in fulfilling the administration’s
social development commitments.
According to the
Ministry of Sports, a total of 87 fitness and recreation centers have been
allocated so far to various state-owned enterprises and private companies. The
centers are expected to promote healthy lifestyles, create accessible spaces
for exercise, and provide opportunities for community-based recreational
activities across the islands.
The initiative
is part of a broader government effort to improve quality of life and support
active living in local communities, particularly at a time when lifestyle
diseases and sedentary habits are rising concerns in the Maldives.
