Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has laid the foundation for a new Fitness and Recreation Center in HDh. Nellaidhoo, marking another step towards President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to establish such facilities on every inhabited island by the end of 2026.
The foundation
laying ceremony was held today during President Muizzu’s visit to Nellaidhoo as
part of his ongoing tour of Haa Dhaalu Atoll. The event was officiated by
Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdullah Rafiu, MACL’s CEO and
Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, and Nellaidhoo Council President
Mohamed Alifu.
A high-level
delegation attended the ceremony, including Minister of Finance and Planning
Moosa Zameer, Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Minister of Health
Abdullah Nazim, Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr.
Abdullah Muttalib, Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed,
and MACL’s Deputy Managing Director Mohamed Lamaan.
The project in
Nellaidhoo is part of a broader initiative launched under an agreement signed
on 18 August 2025 between the Ministry of Sports, Fitness and Recreation and
MACL. The agreement outlines the construction of Fitness and Recreation Centers
in 63 islands across the Maldives, aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles and
providing modern facilities for communities.
The
establishment of these centers is a key pledge of President Muizzu’s
administration, which envisions creating inclusive spaces for sports, fitness,
and community recreation nationwide.
