MMA Opens Call for Research Proposals under MVR 1 Million Research Fund

The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has opened applications for its annual Research Fund, announcing a call for proposals to support high-quality research that informs and strengthens economic policymaking in the Maldives.

Under the initiative, the MMA has allocated a total of MVR 1 million to finance research grants, collaborative projects, and book grants aimed at addressing key macroeconomic, financial, and developmental challenges. The Authority said the fund is designed to promote innovative and policy-relevant studies that contribute to sustainable economic growth and financial stability.

According to the MMA, the program encourages collaboration among policymakers, academics, and independent researchers to generate evidence-based insights that can guide national policy decisions. The call for proposals is open to independent researchers, academic institutions, think tanks, and MMA staff partnering with recognized research organizations.

Independent applicants must hold at least a Master’s degree, while PhD holders are strongly encouraged to apply. Collaborative projects must be co-developed with MMA staff and align with the Authority’s strategic priorities.

In addition to research papers, the fund includes a Book Grant category for individuals or teams with prior publications or relevant experience. Eligible works may be written in Dhivehi or English, with priority given to books that enhance financial literacy, deepen understanding of the Maldivian economy, or foster informed policy debate.

Research themes for this year’s call include macroeconomic stability, monetary policy, financial sector resilience, climate and sustainability, digital finance and inclusion, economic diversification, Islamic finance, labour markets, and education.

Successful applicants will receive funding to cover key research expenses, including data collection, fieldwork, research assistance, and dissemination. Collaborative projects will also benefit from peer review, co-publication opportunities with MMA staff, and presentation slots at the MMA Research Conference.

Applications must be submitted electronically to [email protected] by 30 October 2025. The Academic and Technical Review Committee will evaluate proposals based on originality, feasibility, policy relevance, and potential impact. Selected applicants will be notified by 9 November 2025.

Further details, including submission guidelines and templates, are available on the Maldives Monetary Authority’s official website.
