Velana International Airport (VIA) has announced that the newly established seaplane check-in counters at Terminal 1, Arrival Gate 4, are now fully operational, marking a significant enhancement to the arrival experience for passengers travelling onward to island destinations across the Maldives.
The new facility spans approximately 1,000 square feet and features 24 check-in counters dedicated to four seaplane operators. Designed to improve comfort and efficiency, the fully air-conditioned space offers a spacious and welcoming environment, providing passengers with a smooth transition from international arrival to domestic seaplane transfer at Velana International Airport.
A key highlight of the terminal is its thoughtfully designed interior, which incorporates centrally located “atoll seating” areas inspired by the Maldives’ lush green islands encircled by pristine sandy beaches. This island-themed concept creates a calm and relaxing atmosphere for travelers, setting a positive first impression of the destination while easing congestion during peak arrival periods.
Airport officials noted that the new check-in area represents a substantial improvement over the former Terminal 2 arrival space, which was often constrained by limited capacity and heat. The upgraded Terminal 1 facility offers improved passenger flow, better climate control, and a more organized layout tailored to the growing volume of seaplane transfers.
To further support seamless operations, vehicle capacity around the check-in counters has been expanded. The area now includes nine passenger bus slots, ten luggage vehicle slots, and eleven standby vehicle slots, enabling smoother coordination between airlines, ground handlers, and transport providers.
The opening of the seaplane check-in counters at Terminal 1 forms part of VIA’s broader modernization programme aimed at strengthening operational efficiency and elevating service standards. The development underscores the airport’s commitment to enhancing connectivity and ensuring a comfortable, world-class arrival experience for visitors to the Maldives.
