The State
Electric Company (Stelco) has committed to planting 500,000 trees as part of
the nationwide reforestation campaign initiated by President Dr. Mohamed
Muizzu. The pledge was announced by Stelco Managing Director Hussain Fahmy in a
statement shared via social media platform X, reaffirming the company’s active
role in supporting the president’s ambitious environmental agenda.
President Muizzu
launched the national tree-planting campaign on June 5, setting a goal to plant
five million trees across the Maldives within five years. The initiative is
aimed at enhancing environmental sustainability, promoting biodiversity, and
combating the impacts of climate change. Government institutions, local
councils, state-owned enterprises, and community associations have been
mobilized to contribute to the nationwide effort.
“We will plant
500,000 trees to fulfill the President’s promise,” Fahmy stated in his post. He
added that Stelco has already begun organizing weekend planting events in the
islands and regions served by the utility company. These activities are
designed to involve local communities while accelerating progress toward the
company’s reforestation target.
According to
Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim, over 400,000 trees have already been
planted nationwide since the launch of the campaign earlier this month,
reflecting strong institutional support and public enthusiasm.
Stelco’s
commitment underscores the role of state-owned enterprises in driving forward
national development priorities beyond their core mandates. While traditionally
focused on electricity generation and distribution, the company is now aligning
its efforts with environmental stewardship, sustainability, and national
climate goals.
As part of the
broader campaign, councils and public institutions are expected to report
progress regularly, with the government encouraging the use of native plant
species to strengthen local ecosystems. The tree-planting initiative is among
the most ambitious environmental undertakings in the country’s history and
forms a central part of President Muizzu’s vision for a greener, more
climate-resilient Maldives.
