President Muizzu: Holistic Development Within Reach Through National Interest

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has declared that holistic national development is well within reach, provided efforts remain firmly rooted in the national interest. He made the remarks at the official inauguration of the new terminal at Velana International Airport, a landmark event held on the evening of Independence Day.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Muizzu called for a renewed national commitment to unity and shared purpose, noting that the opening of the new terminal comes as the nation also celebrates 60 years of independence. He urged Maldivians to prioritise the nation’s interest over personal or political gain, stressing that such an approach is vital to building a prosperous, harmonious future for generations to come.

The President described the new terminal as a symbol of what can be accomplished through collaborative development. He highlighted the importance of economic sufficiency as the foundation of true sovereignty, underscoring the pivotal role Velana International Airport plays as the cornerstone of the Maldivian economy, especially in its impact on tourism and national growth.

The timing of the inauguration on July 26 was intentional, the President said, linking the economic milestone with the spirit of national independence. He expressed confidence that the terminal will serve as a driver of economic expansion and enhanced international connectivity.

President Muizzu extended heartfelt appreciation to everyone involved in the decade-long development of the terminal, singling out former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom and former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for their roles in advancing the project during their respective terms.

He also paid tribute to the international development partners whose support was instrumental in financing the terminal, including the Saudi Fund for Development, the OPEC Fund for International Development, the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, and the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, along with contributions from the state budget.

Concluding his remarks, the President acknowledged the collective effort that made the project a reality. “Success lies in the dedication of many working towards a common vision, and tonight, we celebrate that very success, together.”
