Maldives’ leading tourism company Universal Enterprises has donated USD 100,000 to support disaster relief efforts in Sri Lanka following the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah.
The donation was officially handed over at a ceremony by President of the Universal Foundation and Assistant Director (Corporate) – Statutory Compliance of the company, Iyaz Waheed, to the Sri Lankan High Commissioner to the Maldives, Mohamed Rizvi Hassen.
In a post published by the High Commission of Sri Lanka, the Government of Sri Lanka expressed its deep appreciation to Universal Enterprises for the generous contribution.
“The Government of Sri Lanka wishes to express sincere appreciation to Universal Enterprises Pvt Ltd of Maldives for the donation of USD 100,000 for disaster relief efforts. Sri Lanka is grateful for your generosity during this hour of need,” the statement read.
The Maldives has mobilised strong support for Sri Lanka during this difficult period, with contributions coming from the Government of Maldives, the private sector, and the general public.
The Government of Maldives pledged USD 50,000 in financial assistance, while a nationwide telethon led by Public Service Media (PSM) in collaboration with private media partners raised USD 834,843.98. Significant financial support has also been extended by private companies.
In addition to monetary aid, the Maldives provided substantial material assistance, including 25,000 cases of canned tuna worth USD 1,232,166.02, produced by the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Ltd (MIFCO).
The collective efforts highlight the strong bond between the Maldives and Sri Lanka, as well as the Maldivian nation’s continued commitment to regional solidarity in times of crisis.
