The Maldives
Monetary Authority (MMA) has announced the launch of the Tamweel EconQuest
Debate Competition, an initiative aimed at engaging young Maldivians in
critical discussions on pressing economic issues. Open to students aged 16 to
25 from schools, colleges, and universities in the Greater Malé region, the
competition seeks to promote financial literacy, civic awareness, and critical
thinking among the nation’s future leaders.
Participants
will debate on themes ranging from financial inclusion and climate change to
digital currencies and Islamic economics. A pool of possible topics will be
shared in advance, with final motions revealed on the day of the competition.
The debates will be conducted in English using a modified public forum or
spontaneous argumentation style, with each speaker given up to five minutes and
30 minutes of preparation time prior to each debate.
The competition
offers attractive rewards, with the champion team set to receive MVR 8,000
along with a trophy and certificates. The runner-up team will be awarded MVR
5,000 and certificates, while the Best Speaker will receive MVR 2,000. A
Special Recognition Award of MVR 1,000 will also be given for creativity,
impactful delivery, and unique perspectives.
MMA emphasized
that EconQuest is designed not only to build public speaking and analytical
skills but also to empower students to explore real-world economic challenges
and propose innovative solutions for a more inclusive and resilient financial
future.
Interested
teams, consisting of three to five members including a nominated leader, must
submit applications by 11:59pm Maldivian time on September 30, 2025.
Applications can be submitted via the official form, and participants
experiencing technical difficulties are advised to contact the MMA at [email protected].
