MACL activates special flight procedures amid reduced visibility

Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has announced that it is implementing additional precautionary measures to maintain aviation safety during periods of reduced visibility caused by poor air quality or heavy rainfall.

According to Maldives Airports Company Limited, the measures are activated whenever visibility drops to levels that may affect normal flight operations. One key step includes the temporary suspension of Visual Flight Rules (VFR) and the adoption of Special Visual Flight Rules (SVFR) to ensure continued operational safety.

MACL said that when visibility falls below five kilometres, VFR operations are suspended and aircraft are required to operate under SVFR. These procedures are carried out in line with regulations issued by the Maldives Civil Aviation Authority and the International Civil Aviation Organization.

The company stressed that the temporary shift to SVFR is a standard safety measure designed to provide additional operational support during adverse conditions, allowing flights to continue safely under stricter control.

MACL reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all domestic and international airlines, as well as passengers, during periods of reduced visibility across the Maldives’ aviation network.
