State Electric
Company (STELCO) has officially inaugurated the Annex-2 power plant in
Hulhumale, aimed at ensuring an uninterrupted electricity supply during peak
consumption periods. The facility was commissioned by STELCO’s Managing
Director, Hussain Fahmy, at a ceremony held on Saturday, attended by Members of
Parliament representing Male constituencies.
The new power
plant will significantly enhance Hulhumale’s electricity capacity, with a total
of 12 generator sets of 1.6 MW each. Seven of these generators have already
been installed, while the remaining five are scheduled to be in place before
the end of Ramadan. Once fully operational, the plant will generate a total of
19.2 MW of power, addressing the growing energy demands of the city.
STELCO employees
completed the installation in just nine days, executing an extensive workload
that involved clearing 48,000 square feet of land and removing approximately
200 tons of debris. The team also leveled the land, connected the new facility
to Hulhumale’s existing Annex-1 power plant, laid oil pipelines, and integrated
engine cables into the grid.
General Manager
Ahmed Shaaniz, who oversaw the project, commended the tireless efforts of
STELCO employees, who worked continuously, including during Ramadan, to meet
the deadline. He highlighted the dedication of the workforce in ensuring that
the project was completed efficiently despite the challenges.
Speaking at the
ceremony, Managing Director Fahmy described the rapid completion of the power
plant as a significant national achievement. He emphasized that electricity
demand is expected to rise following Ramadan and the onset of the summer
season, making the timely launch of Annex-2 crucial for maintaining a stable
power supply.
Fahmy also
acknowledged the support of President Mohamed Muizzu in expediting the project.
He noted that the President closely monitored progress, attended key meetings
regarding land acquisition, and provided guidance to resolve challenges that
arose during the development of the power plant.
With the
completion of Annex-2, STELCO aims to strengthen Hulhumale’s energy
infrastructure, ensuring residents and businesses have reliable access to
electricity as demand surges in the coming months.
