Le Méridien
Maldives Resort & Spa has achieved the esteemed Green Globe Certification,
reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
This milestone highlights the resort’s dedication to harmonizing with the
pristine surroundings of the Lhaviyani Atoll while offering guests meaningful,
eco-conscious experiences.
Green Globe, the
leading certification program for sustainable tourism, evaluates organizations
against 44 stringent criteria and over 380 compliance indicators. This rigorous
assessment ensures that certified properties meet the highest global standards
for economic, social, and environmental sustainability.
At the heart of
Le Méridien Maldives’ sustainability efforts is its Marine Conservation Hub,
where guests can actively engage in marine conservation initiatives. Through
the ‘Marine Master’ immersive program—part of Good Travel with Marriott
Bonvoy—visitors can participate in hands-on conservation modules such as Reef
Explorer, Turtle Quest, and Build A Coral Reef, all guided by the resort’s
resident marine biologist. For younger guests, the Kids Hub offers
environmental education programs to foster an early appreciation for nature.
A standout
feature of the resort’s eco-friendly initiatives is its 430-square-meter
hydroponic greenhouse, one of the largest in the Maldives. Producing 30
kilograms of pesticide-free vegetables daily, the greenhouse utilizes recycled
rainwater and innovative farming techniques. Guests can experience
farm-to-table dining at The Harvest Table or take part in the Family Foraging
program, which offers interactive culinary experiences centered on sustainable
living.
Energy
efficiency remains a key focus, with the resort’s solar power installations
generating 548 kWp, reducing diesel consumption by 20% annually. Water
conservation measures, including tap aerators and wastewater recycling for
landscaping, further contribute to minimizing the environmental footprint.
The resort is
also committed to preserving native vegetation, mangrove ecosystems, and coral
reefs. Its onsite bottling plant eliminates the need for 225,000 plastic
bottles annually, while eco-composting systems convert organic waste into
nutrient-rich fertilizer, supporting a circular approach to resource
management.
“Our Green Globe
Certification is a reflection of our unwavering commitment to sustainability
and the preservation of the Maldives’ natural beauty,” said Thomas Schult,
General Manager of Le Méridien Maldives Resort & Spa. “By embedding
eco-friendly practices into our guest experiences, we aim to inspire meaningful
connections with the environment while safeguarding it for future generations.”
Located on the
private island of Thilamaafushi, Le Méridien Maldives Resort & Spa blends
European elegance with the breathtaking natural beauty of the Maldives.
Offering overwater and beach villas, diverse dining options, and immersive
cultural experiences, the resort continues to lead the way in sustainable
luxury hospitality.
