President Muizzu Assures Maldives’ Debt Under Control as Economy Grows

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has assured that the Maldives faces no concern over its debt as the economy continues to expand, stressing that his administration is meeting all obligations without resorting to printing money.

Speaking at a rally organised by the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) at the party’s main camp in Malé on Wednesday, Muizzu said the government was managing both external and domestic debt responsibly while steering the nation’s economy towards recovery.

“We are doing all this to rebuild the damaged economy we inherited. Our economy is now moving at a steady pace, on the right path. There is nothing to worry about,” the President told supporters, underscoring that debt repayments are being met as scheduled.

He further noted that future obligations were also being planned for, ensuring repayment without financial strain. “We are paying whatever debt we owe, and we are also planning for future debts. We will settle them without any worries,” he said.

The President also confirmed that negotiations with China on debt relief had concluded, with agreements already signed. His remarks come shortly after the Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives highlighted Beijing’s continued support during a ceremony in Malé marking China’s National Day.

Muizzu reiterated his commitment to fulfilling electoral pledges, highlighting that several development projects have commenced while others previously stalled were now resuming. “I remember all the promises I made to the people. I am working to fulfil them with sincerity. Each day, new work is starting and some projects that were halted are now resuming,” he said.

Concluding his address, the President called on the public to continue cooperating with the government, stressing that unity was vital for the nation’s progress.
