A contract has been signed for the construction of a new powerhouse, a customs service building, and a perimeter wall for the powerhouse in Dhangethi. The project, valued at over MVR 14 million, has been awarded to Altec Maldives Private Limited and is scheduled for completion within 330 days.
The agreement
was formally signed during a ceremony held at the head office of the State
Electric Company (STELCO). Representing STELCO, Managing Director Hussain Fahmy
signed the contract alongside Altec Maldives' General Manager, Hussain Tasmeen.
Speaking at the
event, STELCO’s Managing Director Fahmy highlighted the urgent need for
enhanced infrastructure in Dhangethi, describing it as a rapidly developing
island with a flourishing local tourism sector. “With the number of guesthouses
increasing and electricity consumption rising daily, Dhangethi is clearly in
need of a modern powerhouse,” Fahmy said. He noted that once the new powerhouse
is completed and operational—expected in around a year and a half—the island’s
residents will benefit from improved and more comprehensive electricity
services.
Also present at
the signing was the Member of Parliament for Dhangethi constituency, Abdullah
Rashee, who expressed optimism and gratitude. Calling the occasion a “very
happy day” for the people of Dhangethi, Rashee remarked that the current
powerhouse’s location has posed challenges for nearby residents and guesthouse
operators. “Today, with this agreement, we see a light at the end of the
tunnel,” he said. Rashee also extended appreciation to President Dr. Mohamed
Muizzu for prioritizing the project and expediting the necessary steps, and to
the Dhangethi Council and its President for securing land for the new facility
amid a land scarcity.
Dhangethi
Council President Muaviyath Rasheed echoed similar sentiments, underlining the
significance of the project for local development. “This is something the
people of Dhangethi greatly needed,” he said, noting that the current
powerhouse has restricted development in its vicinity. Rasheed expressed hope
that the new facility will alleviate longstanding issues and open up new
opportunities for residents and businesses alike.
The launch of
this project is seen as a pivotal moment for Dhangethi, reinforcing the
government’s commitment to supporting infrastructure growth in key localities
across the Maldives.
