Island Aviation Services Ltd. (IASL) has signed a landmark agreement to commence the Maafaru International Airport Terminal Building Extension Project, marking a new phase of growth for one of the northern Maldives’ most strategic aviation hubs. The signing ceremony was held on 13 November 2025, following the recent completion of the airport’s runway expansion and key infrastructure upgrades.
The project has
been awarded to Hunan No.6 Engineering Co., Ltd as the main contractor,
with Gedor Consulting Private Limited appointed as the consultant.
Planned for completion within 10 months, the development will introduce a
modern two-storey terminal extension designed to significantly expand the
airport’s capacity and enhance passenger experience.
According to
IASL, the extension will feature an enlarged arrival hall, a dedicated CIP
lounge, and upgraded first-floor facilities including a new passenger lounge
and additional office spaces. Once completed, the terminal will accommodate
more travellers and streamline passenger flow, strengthening Maafaru’s position
as an essential international gateway for the northern atolls.
The initiative
builds on recent airside improvements, most notably the runway expansion to 2,850
metres, enabling the airport to handle wide-body aircraft. Enhancements to
the aircraft parking area have also increased the capacity to manage business
jets, scheduled flights, and charter operations, reinforcing the airport’s dual
airside and landside capabilities.
Officials noted
that the project holds broader significance for regional development and
sustainable tourism growth. Since opening in 2019, Maafaru International
Airport has supported job creation and delivered economic benefits to nearby
communities. Its Jet A-1 fuel farm and dedicated seaplane dock further
contribute to operational efficiency and strengthen connectivity for luxury
resorts in the region.
IASL stated that
the terminal expansion aligns with the Government of Maldives’ national
development vision to enhance connectivity, elevate service standards, and
support long-term growth of air travel and tourism. The project marks a major
milestone in the company’s ongoing efforts to improve airport infrastructure
across its network and contribute to the economic upliftment of the northern
Maldives.
