On-Site Work Begins on N. Vihafaru Airport Development Project

On-site work for the development of an airport in N. Vihafaru officially began on January 29, marking the start of land reclamation for the project.

The ceremonial launch was held at the project site and was attended by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. The project was formally inaugurated by Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed, along with the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed.

The airport development project will be implemented in two phases. Phase One involves reclaiming land for the airport and installing coastal protection measures. Under this phase, 42 hectares of land will be reclaimed, and 4,267 metres of revetment will be constructed for shoreline protection.

Phase Two will focus on developing airport infrastructure, including the construction of a 1,500-metre runway.

The N. Vihafaru Airport project was designated through a Presidential Decree in March 2024. In July 2024, during a meeting with residents of Noonu Atoll, President Muizzu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the project and assured that on-site work would begin in early 2026.

The project is expected to enhance connectivity in Noonu Atoll and support regional development.
