The Ministry of
Finance and Planning and Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) have signed
an agreement to develop a new airport in Aa. Mathiveri, marking a major
infrastructure initiative for the atoll.
The agreement
was formalized during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to Alifu Alifu
Atoll, where he met with the residents of Mathiveri. CEO and Managing Director
of MACL, Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, signed on behalf of MACL, while State
Minister Hussain Imran represented the Ministry of Finance and Planning.
Under the deal,
MACL will finance, design, and construct the new airport. The project also
includes the reclamation of land for the airport, along with an additional 26.5
hectares adjacent to Mathiveri, designated for residential development to
support population growth and community needs.
Speaking at the
signing ceremony, President Muizzu underscored the importance of the project,
describing it as one of his key campaign pledges. He assured residents that the
airport will be financially sustainable and will deliver wide-ranging benefits
to Mathiveri, the atoll, and the nation’s tourism industry.
The President
further pledged that the airport will be completed and operational within two
and a half years, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to delivering on
infrastructure development across the Maldives.
