Velana International Airport has officially started the
countdown to the opening of its long-awaited new terminal. To mark the
occasion, Ibrahim Shareef, Managing Director of Maldives Airports Company
Limited (MACL), launched a special countdown event on 21 June 2025. The
countdown will run until 26 July, the day the terminal opens, coinciding with
the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day.
The decision to open the terminal on this milestone national
day reflects the project’s significance—not only for the airport, but for the
nation’s broader goals in connectivity, tourism, and infrastructure
development.
Originally signed in 2016, the terminal expansion is one of
the most ambitious projects in the country’s history, second only to the
Sinamalé Bridge. Over the years, it has come to represent a major step forward
in improving the Maldives’ global travel experience.
VIA currently faces severe congestion during peak tourist
periods, often stretching its operational capacity. The new terminal is
expected to ease these challenges, increase capacity, and offer a smoother,
more modern travel experience that aligns with the Maldives' reputation as a
world-class destination.
The opening of the terminal is set to be a key moment in the
Maldives’ infrastructure journey, marking both progress and pride as the
country celebrates six decades of independence.
