Maldives’ fish exports have recorded a dramatic surge this year, surpassing the total revenue of 2024 within the first six months alone. According to statistics released by the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), exports reached 87 million US dollars (MVR 1.3 billion) from January to June 2025, marking a 58 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
In contrast, the
first six months of 2024 brought in only 55 million dollars (MVR 848 million),
and the total for that entire year stood at 82 million dollars (MVR 1.26
billion). The latest figures show that fish exports in the first half of 2025
have already exceeded last year’s annual total, signaling a strong recovery for
the fisheries sector.
Statistics
indicate that fish exports between 2019 and 2023 ranged from 130 million to 155
million dollars annually, with 2024 marking the steepest decline in both export
volume and revenue. The rebound in 2025 suggests a renewed demand for Maldivian
tuna and related products.
During the first
half of this year, local fish purchases amounted to 60,000 metric tons, out of
which 52,000 metric tons were skipjack tuna. Export volumes reached around
53,000 metric tons, including 47,000 metric tons of raw fish — an 80 percent
rise compared to last year. The volume of canned fish products also recorded
growth, increasing by about 300 metric tons.
Fisheries remain
one of the Maldives’ largest industries, serving as both a vital export earner
and a source of livelihood for thousands of Maldivians. With export figures
already surpassing last year’s performance, the sector is expected to play an
even stronger role in driving the country’s economic growth this year.
