Ooredoo Maldives has showcased its new AI-powered electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC) system at the Mobile World Congress in Doha, marking a significant advancement in the country’s transition toward fully digital customer onboarding.
The cutting-edge
eKYC solution—now live across Ooredoo’s digital SIM activation
channels—automates identity verification to speed up registrations and
strengthen fraud prevention. The system captures ID information, conducts
liveness checks, performs facial matching, and instantly approves SIM
provisioning without the need for physical forms or in-person queues.
According to
Ooredoo, the onboarding process has been reduced from around 60 seconds to just
10 seconds, with more than 90 percent of registrations receiving instant
approval. The technology also includes advanced fraud-detection capabilities
that can flag altered photos and counterfeit IDs.
The verification
process uses a multi-layered pipeline incorporating AI-based ID capture,
optical character recognition, field validation, anti-spoofing checks, and
real-time SIM activation once verification thresholds are met. The company
highlighted that the entire journey is paperless and can be completed entirely
from a mobile phone.
Khalid
Al-Hamadi, CEO and Managing Director of Ooredoo Maldives, said the innovation
aligns with the nation’s push for digital transformation. “As a leading tourist
destination, the Maldives must offer more than natural beauty. We must offer
world-class digital experiences. Providing fast, reliable connectivity and
smart digital solutions to every visitor and every local is crucial to our
mission,” he noted.
Ooredoo stated
that the eKYC rollout supports broader national ambitions for a “Digital
Maldives,” enhancing customer convenience while reducing operational
inefficiencies. The introduction of this technology also mirrors global trends
in the telecom industry, where AI-powered verification is emerging as the new
standard for secure and efficient onboarding.
