Velana International Airport (VIA) has officially commenced
passenger services for ITA Airways at its new Terminal 1, marking another
milestone in the terminal’s phased operational rollout.
A special ceremony was held at Terminal 1 today to
commemorate the start of ITA Airways’ operations from the facility. The event
was attended by Minister at the Presidential Palace, Iqbal Adam, along with
representatives from ITA Airways and Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL).
ITA Airways was represented by its Outstation Coordinator,
Daniel Piras, while senior management and officials from MACL were also present
at the ceremony.
As part of the inauguration, the airline’s check-in counters
at Terminal 1 were officially opened. Gifts were presented to 60 passengers
departing on an ITA Airways flight, while a traditional Maldivian welcome was
extended to the 290 passengers arriving on the airline’s inaugural Terminal 1
flight, AZ776.
ITA Airways becomes the second Italian airline to operate
from Terminal 1. The carrier first launched its services to the Maldives on
December 18, 2022, strengthening air connectivity between Italy and the
Maldives.
With the addition of ITA Airways, Terminal 1 is now serving
a total of 35 airlines. MACL stated that the company continues to work towards
providing comprehensive, high-standard services to all airlines operating
flights to and from the Maldives, as the new terminal gradually expands its
operations.
