A signing ceremony held today marked the commencement of design and consultancy services for the expansion of the passenger terminal at Dharavandhoo Airport, a key domestic gateway serving Baa Atoll. The agreement was signed between Island Aviation Services Ltd (IASL) and Epoch Associates Pvt. Ltd, formally launching the next phase of development aimed at enhancing capacity and improving the overall passenger experience at the airport.
Under the
consultancy agreement, Epoch Associates will undertake comprehensive design and
advisory services covering both upgrades to the existing passenger terminal and
the design of a new terminal extension. The scope of work focuses on improving
passenger flow, operational functionality, and comfort, in response to
sustained passenger activity and growing operational demands at Dharavandhoo
Airport.
The planned
improvements include expanded arrival facilities, enhanced check-in and baggage
handling areas, and reconfigured interior layouts to better accommodate peak
passenger movements. Refreshed internal finishes and the introduction of
additional passenger amenities are also part of the consultancy scope,
alongside measures to improve efficiency within operational and support spaces.
The terminal
extension design will incorporate a dedicated passenger lounge, additional
departure gates, baby-care facilities, outdoor areas, and landscaping, creating
a more welcoming and functional environment for both travellers and airport
staff. These enhancements are intended to support smoother airport operations
while elevating the overall travel experience.
Dharavandhoo
Airport operates throughout the day and plays a vital role in connecting Baa
Atoll, supporting both tourism-related travel and daily movement by local
residents. The airport sees consistent passenger traffic due to nearby resorts,
guesthouses, and marine attractions, alongside regular domestic travel.
Maldivian operates daily scheduled flights to Dharavandhoo from Velana
International Airport, with further connectivity to Maafaru International
Airport and other domestic destinations.
With passenger
activity remaining steady and operational requirements continuing to grow, the
terminal expansion is seen as a necessary step to enhance capacity, improve
comfort, and ensure efficient airport operations. The project aligns with the
Government’s broader efforts to upgrade airport infrastructure across the
Maldives, while reflecting IASL’s continued focus on meeting rising passenger
and operational demands in the domestic aviation sector.
