Qatar Airways has commenced operations from the new Terminal 1 at Velana International Airport, marking another significant step in the expansion of passenger services at the Maldives’ main international gateway. The move brings the national carrier of Qatar into Terminal 1 as the facility continues to grow its roster of international airlines.
The start of services was marked by a ceremonial event held at Terminal 1 yesterday, attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Abdulla Khaleel. The ceremony underscored the importance of the transition for both the airport and the airline, as Terminal 1 positions itself as a modern hub designed to enhance passenger experience and operational efficiency.
Senior officials
present at the event included Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) Chief
Executive Officer and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, Qatar Airways
Vice President of Network Stations Paul Lu-Cien, along with executives from
Qatar Airways and MACL. As part of the commencement, Qatar Airways’ check-in
counters at Terminal 1 were officially opened, signaling the full integration
of the airline’s operations into the new terminal.
To mark the
occasion, gifts were presented to 162 departing passengers traveling on Qatar
Airways flights. Meanwhile, 222 passengers arriving on the airline’s first
flight to approach Terminal 1, QR674, were welcomed with traditional cultural
performances, reflecting the Maldives’ hospitality and the significance of the
milestone.
Qatar Airways
becomes the first Qatari airline to operate from Terminal 1. The carrier has
maintained a long-standing presence in the Maldives, having first launched
services to the country on December 18, 2001. Its transition to Terminal 1
highlights the airline’s continued commitment to the Maldivian market and the
growing demand for connectivity through the island nation.
With the
addition of Qatar Airways, Terminal 1 is now serving a total of 37 airlines.
According to MACL, the expansion aligns with its broader objective of
delivering comprehensive, high-standard services to airlines and passengers
alike, as Velana International Airport continues to modernize its
infrastructure to meet rising international traffic and expectations.
The commencement
of Qatar Airways’ operations from Terminal 1 further reinforces Velana
International Airport’s role as a key aviation hub in the Indian Ocean region,
supporting tourism growth and strengthening global connectivity to the
Maldives.
