President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the long-delayed Naagoashi tourism project will finally move forward, with the Maldives Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) set to commence practical work under full government support. The project, located in South Thiladhunmathi Atoll, is expected to transform the region into a thriving tourism destination.
Speaking to
residents of Naivaadhoo, President Muizzu said the initiative, which had been
stalled for years, is now ready to begin with materials mobilised through the
combined efforts of the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Maldives. He
stressed that the project represents a crucial step in expanding tourism
opportunities in a part of the Maldives that has long remained underserved.
The President
highlighted that several lagoons in the atoll have already been allocated for
tourism development, with regulatory concessions introduced to attract
investment and accelerate progress. “South Thiladhunmathi will no longer be
left behind in tourism. We are committed to ensuring its development into a
vibrant and competitive destination,” he said.
Alongside the
Naagoashi project, President Muizzu pledged key infrastructural improvements
for Naivaadhoo. He assured residents that the harbour project would be
completed in line with community needs, while the island’s health centre will
be upgraded to include laboratory services in the upcoming national budget. He
further confirmed that an ambulance will be delivered ahead of schedule.
The President
also announced plans to develop the island’s roads and construct a modern
football field to serve recreational needs. Additionally, a new generator will
be procured to resolve ongoing power supply issues.
During the
ceremony, an agreement was signed with the Maldives Transport and Contracting
Company (MTCC) to carry out a land reclamation and coastal protection project
in Naivaadhoo, further underscoring the government’s commitment to improving
infrastructure in the atoll.
President Muizzu
reiterated that his Administration’s priority is to deliver results swiftly and
effectively, ensuring that both tourism expansion and community development in
South Thiladhunmathi move forward in parallel.
