The national airline, Maldivian, has announced plans to begin direct flights to South Korea, a move aimed at boosting tourist arrivals from the East Asian nation and strengthening bilateral business ties.
In preparation
for the launch, Maldivian has initiated the process of appointing a General
Sales Agent (GSA) in South Korea. The airline said the initial contract with
the selected GSA will run for three years, with an option to extend the
agreement for a further two years depending on performance. The agreement is
expected to be finalized before October 31, with an official signing ceremony
scheduled for November 6, 2025.
Parties
interested in becoming the airline’s GSA must submit proposals by 3:00 p.m. on
October 7. Maldivian stated that the evaluation process will prioritize
technical competence, which will carry 60 percent of the weight, while
financial criteria will account for 40 percent. Technical requirements include
company profile, industry experience, IATA accreditation, staff expertise,
partnerships with travel agencies and online platforms, and digital marketing
capabilities. Financial evaluation will be based on audited reports for the
past three years, equity, liquidity, asset turnover, profit margin, and
proposed commission percentage.
Island Aviation,
which operates Maldivian, emphasized that the introduction of direct flights to
South Korea reflects the company’s broader strategy to expand international
routes. The airline noted that South Korea is an increasingly important source
market for Maldivian tourism, and direct connectivity is expected to enhance
both visitor arrivals and trade opportunities.
Currently, the
Maldives receives a significant number of South Korean tourists, and industry
stakeholders believe the new route will further boost arrivals, supporting the
government’s efforts to diversify tourist markets.
