The Ministry of Economic Trade and Development has signed an agreement with Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) to establish duty-free facilities for food and essential goods and to provide bonded warehouse services at Hithadhoo Commercial Harbour.
The agreement was signed this evening at a ceremony held at Addu High School. It was signed on behalf of the government by Minister of Economic Development Mohamed Saeed, while MPL was represented by its Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, retired DCP Mohamed Rishwan.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that duty-free services for food and essential commodities in Addu City will begin in February 2026 at the Hithadhoo Commercial Harbour.
According to MPL, the agreement provides for the establishment of a bonded area at the harbour to store food, essential goods, and other items duty-free. The facility will also offer bonded warehouse services for resorts in the southern Maldives and include a dedicated area for bulk storage of construction materials such as stones and sand.
The initiative is expected to improve access to essential goods in Addu City, reduce costs, and strengthen logistics and supply chains in the southern region of the Maldives.
