Maldivian Welcomes Its First Wide-Body Airbus A330

The Maldives' national carrier, Maldivian, celebrated the arrival of its first wide-body aircraft, the Airbus A330, today.

The aircraft landed at Velana International Airport this afternoon, where a special ceremony was held to commemorate its arrival and officially inaugurate it into the fleet. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu was present to welcome the new addition.

The plane, delivered from Singapore, was operated by an all-Maldivian crew. An airshow was organized as part of the celebrations to mark this significant milestone.

“A historic touchdown for Maldivian aviation. Today marks a new chapter as our first Airbus A330 joins our fleet, expanding our capabilities and connecting the Maldives to new horizons,” Maldivian announced.

Under the guidance of the Cabinet, President Muizzu approved the launch of wide-body operations starting December 17, 2023. This initiative aims to establish direct flights to key destinations, enhance tourism, and expand the Maldives' global connectivity.

During today’s ceremony, President Muizzu also announced that a second wide-body aircraft would join the fleet by October this year.

The Airbus A330, capable of operating long-haul flights without the need for transit stops, can accommodate up to 250 passengers.

Maldivian was established in 2000 following the bankruptcy of the previous national carrier, Air Maldives. Launched in 1974, Air Maldives operated wide-body aircraft and provided direct flights to Europe, the Middle East, and the Far East.
