IndiGo to Launch Direct Flights Between Malé and Trivandrum Next Month

Indian budget carrier IndiGo will begin operating direct flights between Velana International Airport (VIA) and Trivandrum, India, starting on the 26th of next month, according to reports in Indian media.

Trivandrum is one of the most frequented destinations for Maldivians seeking medical treatment, and the new route is expected to provide greater convenience for travelers. With the addition of this service, IndiGo’s weekly flights to the Maldives will rise to 26.

IndiGo’s Head of Sales, Vinay Malhotra, was quoted in Indian media as saying that the new connection would not only strengthen air travel between the two countries but also contribute to boosting tourist arrivals. “The start of flights to Trivandrum will also increase the number of tourists coming to India and the Maldives,” he said.

Currently, IndiGo operates direct flights between Malé and three Indian cities — Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Kochi. The new Trivandrum route will be operated using the airline’s 78-seater ATR aircraft.

The announcement comes just a day after IndiGo shifted its operations to VIA’s newly opened passenger terminal. The airline, India’s largest and Asia’s second-largest, first launched services to the Maldives in November 2018.
